Eugen Jost

Eugen Jost is a Swiss artist, born in 1950 in Zürich, whose work is strongly influenced by mathematics. His early career was a technical one: after taking an apprenticeship with Siemens- Albis Telecommunications and working as a technical designer in Lausanne, he went on to Teacher Training College in Bern, later becoming a teacher and an instructor in Matten/Interlaken and Spiez.

For the past twenty years, he has studied and worked in the field of art, particularly pottery, sculpture and painting. He likes to experiment with signs and numbers, letters and characters, and his preferred techniques and materials are currently silk-screen and acrylic colours. Well known are his paintings of the mathematics calendar 2008.

Peter Baptist

Peter Baptist, born in 1948 in Bad Kissingen, studied mathematics and physics – diploma in mathematics, PhD and qualification as a university professor at Würzburg University. He worked as a teacher at a Gymnasium in Bayreuth and at a comprehensive school in Hollfeld. He got professorships at Erlangen University and at the Technical University Dresden. Since 1994 he has held the chair of mathematics and mathematics education at Bayreuth University. Research activities: Optimization Theory, Elementary Geometry, History of Mathematics, Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, Development of Dynamic Worksheets and Learning Environments, Dynamic Mathematics GEONExT.

Among other projects he was responsible for the improvement of teaching and learning of mathematics in SINUS and SINUS-Transfer, a nationwide project with more than 1800 schools.
